The NSW GBOTA this week lodged a response to the NSW Department of Primary Industries discussion paper on the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Standards and Guidelines relative to animals in pet shops and the breeding of Dogs and Cats.

The Association made the following submission to the Department of Industries given the standards and guidelines likelihood to assist in the shaping of the NSW Greyhound Code of Practice. The Greyhound Racing Act 2017, sets out the requirements associated with the Code of Practice's development which is expected to be commenced in the second half of 2018.

It is the view of the NSW GBOTA that the Guidelines and Standards drafted were particularly restrictive to hobbyist and residential dog and cat breeders. Further, definitions meant all persons, no matter the level of involvement could be classed as a pet shop or commercial operation. The Association's overall position remains an exemption for greyhounds must apply.

The NSW GBOTA will continue to work with GRNSW and the NSW Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission on the development of a sensible Code of Practice that has the prime focus of animal welfare and a vibrant industry future.
