American import, Lucy Wires, claimed the Group 3 Bohemia Crystal Sydney Cup (720m) at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.
The strong breeding prospect, owned by Victoria’s Geoff Collins, powered home after sitting over ten lengths off early leader Infinite Wish passing the post the first time.
Turning for home, NSW strong finisher Gradence looked to have Infinite Wish’s measure, though it was Lucy Wires which emerged to claim the 42.57 victory and bag $25,000 in the process.
Heat winner Infinite Wish for Angela Langton held on in second, showing she will remain a strong staying prospect into the future, while Gradence finished in third.
Prepared by Robert Britton of Lara (Victoria), Lucy Wires won by 3/4 of a length, with half a length between second and third.
Lucy Wires will return to Victoria and is expected to prepare for the Group 1 Bold Trease at Sandown Park in a month’s time.
Wentworth Park’s next feature is the Group 1 Sportingbet Vic Peters Classic on October 26, 2013.
