Wentworth Park put on a sizzling summer’s night of racing for race goers on Saturday night (December 7), with the final of the Schweppes Summer Cup and heats of the John Stollery Christmas Gift heading the program.
The dual Group 3 events did not disappoint racing enthusiast, with some remarkable performances making many note new names in their little black book.
Opening the card for the features, Steve Collins prepared Allen Malik capitalised on his box one draw in the opening heat of the John Stollery Christmas Gift. Spearing the lids, Allen Malik, hot off his Ballarat Cup campaign, notched out a 29.96, three length victory for his first appearance at the Glebe venue. Wentworth Park regular Electro Storm finished strongly, after getting caught in trouble early, to claim second position and book a spot in next Saturday’s $25,000 to the winner final.
On the return trail, Ritza Ryder, returned the show of faith to connections, claiming heat two in 30.08, after flashing late to snatch victory from early leader Satchmo’s Hanky. Both greyhounds drawing favourably in next weekend’s final.
Fastest qualifier honours came in heat three, when Double Twist ran down Victorian Group 1 winner Peter Rocket in the shadows of the line. Stopping the clock at 29.74, Double Twist, which is more known for her early dash, showed her capability to finish strongly in an event.
The final heat saw Graeme Barnett prepared Edge continue on his strong run of city form, leading all the way in 29.90. Scoring by 1¾ lengths over Queenslander, Tee Brady, Edge posted the fastest early section of the series at a lightning 5.35.
Saturday’s four heats have shaped an interesting showdown, with the December 14 John Stollery Christmas Gift Final set to provide a real treat to those trackside for the annual kids Christmas party.
Complementing the four heats of the Christmas Gift, was the running of the Schweppes Summer Cup, with Victorian stayer Dyna Willow stamping her mark on the Group Race circuit.
The daughter of Collision was impressive in the heat victory last week, posting out strong early sections. On Saturday night, she was again able to feature early going with early leader Infinite Wish. Rounding the home turn Dyna Willow made a move and held out a strong challenge from Smart Valentino, to stop the clock at 41.92.
