Saturday’s (March 22) two Betfair Cup Group 3 720m heats, offered race goers a taste of what’s still to come as Wentworth Park gears up to the Golden Easter Egg Carnival.
With the stayers on centre stage it was Victorian trainers Robert Britton and Steve Collins which again continued their strong run of staying form at the Glebe circuit, taking out a heat win each.
Born Ali for Britton won the opening heat in an all of the way display, stopping the clock at 42.41, just 1¾ lengths clear of Destini Fireball, and another two lengths to Suits Us.
In the second heat, Eleazar set a cracking early pace, but Wentworth Park specialist Dyna Willow found a strong position early and was able to pick up the lead out of the back straight to record a sensational 42.04, ahead of Lucy Wires which flashed home late.
Next Saturday’s final is set to be a sensational final, with all runners looking to set themselves up with the ideal preparation for the Group 1 AAA Radiator Specialists Association Cup heats on April 12.
The box draw for Saturday’s Group 3, Betfair Cup is:
Also on the card on Saturday were the final three Macro Meats Golden Easter Egg preludes with Hellyeah Bolt, Yogi Blue and Dark Warrior all booking their April 5 heat position. Dark Warrior’s victory will ensure trainer Darren McDonald has at least two runners in the series, with Perth Cup winner Keybow also set to start. McDonald is one of just two trainers to have won the Golden Easter Egg twice in its 25 year history.
Prior to race 1, McDonald’s Keybow trialled 29.62, while recent Horsham Cup winner Crump trialled 29.85
