Greyhound racing in the Riverina lost one of its greatest contributors with the passing last week of Bill Wehrstedt.

Mr Wehrstedt, 85, was a former NSW GBOTA Director representing the Riverina District between 1980 and 1997. Together with his beloved wife, the late Marg, Bill was the driving force behind Temora in its halcyon days as a ‘feeder track’ to the old Harold Park.

Mr Wehrstedt was awarded Life Membership of the NSW GBOTA in 1992 and remained interested in the greyhound industry until his death despite declining health.

NSW GBOTA Chairman, Geoff Rose, described Bill Wehrstedt as an outstanding person.

“Bill was a great family man, his love for Marg was deeply committed and he made a great contribution at Temora”, said Mr Rose.

“Temora sits today, in my opinion, as one of the State’s best presented tracks.

“Bill Schwencke and Garry Harding have followed Bill as Area Directors and each would acknowledge the great foundation the entire Wehrstedt family made at Temora.”

Bill Wehrstedt’s funeral took place at St Paul’s Anglican Church at Temora last Saturday, April 16, 2011.
