Trainer Melinda Finn is no stranger to Group racing success and last night she added the Group One Vic Peters Classic final trophy to her cabinet, after her charge Gatlin led all the way from box one.
Owned by Finn's nephew and his football team friends, there were scenes of jubilation after the event in the stands, as the owners celebrated their first group victory.
The son of Dyna Double One and Von Magic stepped beautifully from the inside alley, leading all the way to score by three quarters of a length in 29.94. It was his seventh career victory from start nineteen. Canya Wilder for Michelle Sultana was brave in defeat in finishing second, with the fast finishing Victorian Red Reactor for Daniel Pell in third.
Finn spoke post-race about the fact he's been trialling really fast and not doing it in races and believed he had to lead in the final to be competitive. She also paid tribute to her husband John, a master conditioner who would've been proud as punch watching from their Cranebrook property.
Gatlin was handled by 15-year old Briana Jackson, who's taken the sport by storm over the past few months with her success in handling winners left, right and centre. She was overwhelmed with emotion post-race, evident it won't be the last group race victor she handles.
