Eric Castle trained Key To Eden has upset short priced favourite Zipping Lad in Saturday’s (October 15) Group 3 Pages Event Equipment Sydney Cup (720m) at Wentworth Park.
All the rage in betting, Zipping Lad trained by Jason Mackay led the entire trip, bar the winning post, with the $6.30 pop Key To Eden running the son of Malfoy x Or Catra down in the final strides to the line.
Key to Eden owner Stephen Connor’s said following the event while delighted with the victory it was a bit of a shock given Zipping Lad’s early lead.
“It was very surprising, when he (Zipping Lad) went past the post the first time in front of the pack, I sort of thought second would be nice.
“Then she started peeling ground off him and I thought, what am I seeing here,” Connor’s explained.
“And she has managed to win it, which was great.”
Connor’s tasted Group 1 glory back in 2006 with Key To Eden’s sire, Suave Fella, which won the Paws Of Thunder.
Having lost the son of Modern Assassin in recent months, Key To Eden’s victory on Saturday could not have come at a better time for the Connor’s family.
“On her night this bitch (Key To Eden) can win just about any race.
“It is just great to see given we lost Suave Fella recently, it’s great to see her do it for the line,” Connor’s added.
Key To Eden will now look to target a selection of staying events including the Schweppes Summer Cup at Wentworth Park and the Newcastle Cup at The Gardens.
Wentworth Park’s Spring Carnival continues next Saturday, October 22, with the running of the Group 1 Centrebet Vic Peters Classic.
Eligible youngsters, whelped on or after April 1, 2009 will descend on the Glebe circuit for the three week series which is worth $75,000 to the winner.
